Isle of Skye – Day 1

The start of a long weekend break so headed up to the Isle of Skye. It’s been a while since we have visited here, infact too long as it’s right up there in my 10 most favourite places to visit in Scotland.

The scenery as always when heading up the North of Scotland is spectacular as ever and especially on this glorious spring day with temperatures reaching 17 degrees!

So with the sun shining and the mountain tops glistening in snow where else would I rather be…nowhere right now but here.

The Isle of Skye, connected to Scotland’s northwest coast by bridge, is known for its rugged landscapes, picturesque fishing villages and medieval castles. The largest island in the Inner Hebrides, it has an indented coastline of peninsulas and narrow lochs, and a mountainous interior.

The town of Portree, a base for exploring the island, features harbourside pubs and boutiques and this is where we will stay.

After the long drive up (Read:loads of stop offs for photo opportunities and just taking in the moment) we reached our destination which is a cosy glamping cabin situated on a working croft in the quiet crofting township of Achachork.

On the “doorstep” of our Wigwam northwards is the Trotternish Ridge, a spectacular ridge of hills which includes its highest summit, the Storr, and it’s iconic pinnacle The Old Man of Storr.

So much unique scenery, outstanding views and manageable walks not to be missed.

After a quick drop off we headed out as we wanted to get a hike in before dark. There never seems to be enough hours in the day!

We headed for the Quiraing Circular Hike, which is an essential walk for any nature lover, hill walker or photographer as it passes through some of the most spectacular landscapes in Scotland.

As part of the Trotternish Ridge it has been formed by a massive landslip which has created high cliffs, hidden plateaus and pinnacles of rocks.

The truly spectacular Quiraing is an icon of Scotland.

Many people visit only the first short section of path, but we chose to do the complete hill circuit, passing the Prison, Needle and other features before climbing back to return; the views are simply sensational and unique throughout.

It feels great to be back in Skye already!
