Dinant – Thursday 15th August 2024
Dinant is a picturesque town located in the Walloon region of Belgium, nestled along the banks of the Meuse River. This charming destination is known for its stunning natural scenery, rich history and cultural heritage, making it a perfect spot for a day trip or a weekend getaway.
As we arrived in Dinant, the first thing that caught our eyes was the dramatic skyline, dominated by the impressive Collegiate Church of Notre Dame and the towering Citadel of Dinant perched high on a cliff.
The town’s unique setting, surrounded by steep cliffs and lush greenery, creates a postcard-perfect view that immediately captivates us.
One of Dinant’s must-visit attractions is the Citadel, which offers panoramic views of the town and the Meuse Valley. You can reach the Citadel either by climbing a series of steep steps or by taking a cable car. Once at the top, you’ll find a fortress rich in history, with exhibitions and guided tours. Today was not the day for viewing!
What we had expected was a quaint and quiet Dinant, but what we got was a very busy jam-packed Dinant on market day! We could not believe our luck but didn’t let it stop us exploring such a beautiful spot!
We walked along the Meuse River, which was lined with quaint cafés, restaurants and shops, offering the perfect spot to relax and take in the views if it were quieter!
You can also opt for a boat ride on the river, which would provide a different perspective of the town and its surroundings.
Dinant is famously the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. Music enthusiasts will appreciate a visit to the Saxophone Museum, located in the house where Sax was born.
The museum is dedicated to his life and work, showcasing a variety of saxophones and providing insights into the evolution of this iconic instrument. Around town, we also noticed saxophone sculptures, each uniquely decorated, paying tribute to Sax’s legacy.
Dinant is a small town that leaves a big impression and is well worth visiting.
