A Long Weekend in the Heart of the Highlands: Corrour to Rannoch and Back Again

  • May 2025

We spent a long weekend immersed in the wild beauty of the Scottish Highlands, basing ourselves in the remote and magical setting of Rannoch.

There’s something timeless about the drive in here and meeting the end of the road.  From here on in there are no roads, just wilderness and the promise of adventure.

The Old Road to The Isles

We kicked things off in style with coffee and cake in the cosy station café, fuelling up for the days ahead.

One of the highlights was walking the old Road to the Isles from Corrour back to Rannoch. We took the train north to Corrour  Station, another beautifully isolated spot to begin our hike.

From here we followed the ancient path southwards through sweeping moorland, lochside views, and that unique silence you only find deep in the hills. The route gave us a real sense of journey and connection with the land.

A couple of our neighbours

This was some walk indeed.  With the hot sun in our faces and the freezing wind blowing constantly around us, we weren’t sure if we were hot or cold!

The next day, we tackled the two Munros of Sgòr Gaibhre and Càrn Dearg, heading east from Corrour towards Rannoch. The weather was very much like yesterday, and the views from the summits stretched endlessly, Loch Ossian sparkling below, the surrounding peaks silhouetted in soft light.

This turned into a nine-hour epic day across wild, open country.  It was physically demanding, but the panoramic views and feelings of isolation were worth every step.

After descending tired but elated, we returned via the train station at Corrour, where the stillness of the platform and the surrounding landscape gave us quiet moments to soak it all in.

There’s something even better about Corrour Station!  It has the most amazing eatery.  There is no better place to sit down and enjoy the warm food and a glass of something refreshing in such a scenic and peaceful spot.  It was a perfect reward for our efforts!

And of course, no Highland adventure would be complete without a return visit to Corrour Station House for well-earned snacks and drinks before leaving. There’s nothing quite like sipping something cold (or hot!) while reflecting on miles walked, peaks climbed, and memories made.

Remote, rugged, and unforgettable, Corrour and Rannoch delivered the perfect weekend escape.

    1. Hi there…I’d say 3ish a day, each way, depending the day! Lets just say though, you would not want to miss your train otherwise you have a long walk ahead 😉 😀
