GR20 – Corsica – Stage 13

  • D’Usciolu – Refuge d’Asinao
  • August 2023

The day’s hike starts straight away with a 600 meter climb up the mountain behind the refuge. It’s relentlessly steep and requires scrambling up granite slabs in places.

The trail criss-crosses over the spine of the ridge to give us a bit of scrambling but it soon fizzles out and drops down to the plateau.

The next section over the Plateau de Coscione is a completely different landscape to anything encountered so far. Lush and running with flower fringed streams.

Once the trail climbs back along a ridge the real fun of the day begins. Just when you’re tired and ready to be at the next refuge, the trail winds up and up and up through a granite ridge of boulders.

Then we face a challenging scramble reminiscent of the previous day’s climb through the pinnacles of the Aiguilles de Bavella, but it’s kind of fun.

Views at the top were spectacular we stood here for quite a bit.  We could see our refuge miles and miles down the mountain which we knew was going to take us hours to reach.  The descent was once again was slow, long, steep, rocky and covered on loose scree.

The clouds began to roll in so reaching the refuge was such a welcoming sight.

Hi Mary just catching up with the different stages of GR20. Stage 13 looked extremely tricky to say the least. Amazing view when you got to the top of the ridge.xx
