Discovering Bratislava: Slovakia’s Charming Capital

Bratislava completely exceeded our expectations. We chose to stay in a modern high-rise overlooking the River Danube and the city’s beautiful Old Town.

As evening fell, watching Bratislava Castle illuminated above the rooftops while the lights reflected on the river was simply stunning and became one of our favourite memories of the trip.

We spent our days doing what we love most…walking. Wandering along the banks of the Danube before losing ourselves in the maze of cobbled streets in the Old Town, we quickly discovered a city with a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere yet an undeniable elegance.

Around every corner there seemed to be another beautiful square, ornate church, hidden courtyard or impressive building. The architecture is breathtaking and it’s easy to see why the historic centre has become one of Europe’s most underrated gems.

We genuinely felt we could have spent many more days simply exploring its streets.

A visit to Bratislava Castle was a must. Standing high above the city, the distinctive white castle has watched over the Danube for centuries and offers spectacular panoramic views across Bratislava, the river and even into Austria and Hungary on a clear day.

It’s a reminder of the city’s fascinating history, having once been the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary for almost 250 years after the Ottoman occupation of Buda.

Our original plan had been to take the train to Vienna for a day, a journey of barely an hour. Normally we’d never miss the opportunity to visit another city, but Bratislava surprised us.

We enjoyed it so much that, for once, we decided not to leave. Instead, we spent another day soaking up everything the city had to offer and we never regretted that decision.

Bratislava may be one of Europe’s smaller capitals, but it has an incredible charm. Rich in history, full of beautiful architecture, wonderfully walkable and set on the banks of one of Europe’s great rivers, it proved to be one of those destinations that quietly captures your heart.
